The conclusion of the Second World War ended six years of wartime hardships for Australia, New Zealand and England. With nearly one million Australian men and women serving in the Second World War, its impacts were felt by all. So, on 15 August 1945, when Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in the Pacific, joy erupted across the country with thousands of people taking to the streets to celebrate. Tens of thousands of servicemen and women and prisoners of war began returning home and the country turned to rebuilding.
